On September 5, 200 the triptych, Site Specific a 27 panel modular painting in 3 pieces, by J Skewes placed 3rd in the open category of the Living City awards, sponsored by Canberra businessman, Mr T Snow and the Canberra Times.
What the painting aims to achieve, by depicting juxtaposing portions of the original Griffin/Mahony 1911 winning entry Plan of Canberra and non-archetypal, architectural vistas is to reveal multiple perspectives that create a sense of the modern day Canberra. This is done by incorporating consecutive plaster panels that Skewes has etched with an account of the Marion Mahony panoramic Views of Canberra from Mt Ainslie. The alternating panels include multiple perspectives that show an assortment of visual manifestations that the city has now acquired. Site Specific makes obvious that the aptly named Bush Capital heritage of the Griffin/ Mahony plan is visibly alive and well, threatened only by a diminishing contact with the environment. It is up to every generation of builders, planners and citizens to do what it must to preserve what it can. Js 9/9/05 |
